The dinner jacket is required if the invitation states “Black Tie” or “evening dress”. A black silk bow tie is worn with the dinner jacket – hence the English expression “Black Tie”.
If the event takes place during the day, you choose as appropriate clothing the Morning-Suit (Cut). To the Morning-Suit you will always wear a waistcoat, and never a bow tie.
If the invitation asks for “White Tie” or “great evening dress,” it means a Tails , to one always wears a white bow tie made from cotton piqué. Combine this with a waistcoat of the same fabric and a tailcoat shirt with a stand-up collar (patricide), reinforced chest and simple cuffs, but worn with cufflinks. For the shoe, choose a plain black hi-shine shoe.
